If your gate remote has stopped working, don't panic – it's usually a simple fix. Work through these checks.
1. Try another way in
Try a second remote, the keypad or the intercom.

- Others work, yours doesn't → it's your remote. Carry on below.
- Nothing works → it's the gate, not the remote. See electric gate won't open?
Gate Remotes That Stop Working: Common Fixes
Before assuming a remote has died, try another remote, the keypad or the intercom. If those still open the gate, the problem is with the handset; if nothing works, the fault is more likely at the gate itself, in the receiver, aerial or control board.
Fresh batteries fix a surprising number of remote problems, but lost pairing, worn buttons and damage from being dropped are also common. Interference from other equipment can occasionally cause trouble too, especially on busy streets.
Remote Control Repairs and Replacements in Cumbria
We can re-pair existing remotes, supply replacements for all the major brands and repair or replace the receiver if that turns out to be the fault. We can also add extra remotes for new drivers in the household.
If you've lost a remote, we can remove it from the system so it can't be used to open your gate. That's well worth doing for security, and it only takes a few minutes while we're on site for any other repair or service.
2. Check the light
Press the button. Does the little light on the remote come on?
- No light, or a dim light → the battery's flat. Replace it with the same type – it's usually printed on the battery, and the case either pops apart or has a small screw.
- Light comes on → carry on.
3. Check the range
Walk closer to the gate and try again. If it only works close up:
- the battery may be low (even if the light comes on)
- something may be blocking the signal – a new car, a van parked in front, a new wall or fence
- the receiver aerial may be damaged or hidden
An external aerial often fixes range problems.
4. Has it been dropped or got wet?
Remotes don't always survive the washing machine or a fall onto tarmac. If it's been damaged, it'll need replacing.
5. Has it lost its code?
Occasionally a remote, especially after a battery change on some systems, needs re-adding to the receiver. See adding or replacing a gate remote.
If all the remotes stopped at once
If every remote stopped working at the same time, but the keypad or intercom still works, the receiver is the likely culprit. It may have failed, lost its memory after a power cut, or been damaged by a surge. That's one for me.

Questions people ask me
Why has my gate remote stopped working?
Nine times out of ten it's the battery. Otherwise it's damage, range or a receiver problem.
Do I need to reprogram my remote after changing the battery?
Usually not. A few systems do, though.
Can I buy a replacement remote online?
You can, but make sure it's the right model and frequency for your receiver – a photo of your old one helps.
